Rollo Carpenter (* 1965 ) is a British computer scientist and the author of Jabberwacky and Cleverbot , two software systems based on artificial intelligence . Carpenter was the CTO of a new company specializing in business software in Silicon Valley . However, he returned to the UK to work with Icogno .

As the managing director of Existor Ltd. Carpenter develops products based on artificial intelligence for entertainment, “interpersonal” relationships, communication and education . His AI products George and Joan won the Loebner Prize in 2005 and 2006 . In 2010, Carpenter won the British Computer Society's Machine Intelligence Competition .

Cleverbot is a learning and entertaining artificial intelligence that, together with real people, took part in a formal Turing test at the Techniche Festival 2011 at the Indian institute IIT Guwahati on September 3rd. The results of 1,334 votes were announced on September 4th. Cleverbot was declared 59.3% human, which exceeded all expectations. The human competitors, on the other hand, only achieved 63.3%. “What a surprising result. Even higher than even I expected or even dreamed of, ”said the British computer scientist Rollo Carpenter during a lecture at the Technical Festival. "Yesterday's results exceeded 50% and you'd think Cleverbot passed the Turing Test here at Techniche 2011." The way the volunteers chatted during both tests was described as happy chatting and is meant to attract the audience very amused.

Neither of the two tests attempted to “crack” the cleverbot through analytical thinking or a strategy or by confronting complex questions. A “cross-examination” based on such questions would therefore produce a completely different result.

Although the refinement of the Cleverbot is being worked on, it can be clearly seen that it is not able to use complex logic. Currently he is only able to imitate human conversations.

The claim that this hurdle can be overcome is currently fueling an endless debate.

In a Turing test that was carried out at the Techniche 2011, Cleverbot almost achieved the status of "chatty participants", which means something like "talkative participant".

Rollo is the brother of the artist Merlin Carpenter .
