He is a graduate of the Otto Möbes Academy in Graz and the Social Academy of the Chamber for Workers and Salaried Employees in Mödling.

Hebenstreit is married and has one son.

Political positions

Hebenstreit is a declared opponent of the privatization of systemically important infrastructure companies such as ÖBB, ASFINAG , Telekom or Verbund . A frequent opponent in this question is the ÖVP , whose representatives have repeatedly called for such privatizations in the past.

In 2014, Hebenstreit and the vida union took a public stand against the integration of ÖBB and ASFINAG into the state holding company ÖIAG . He feared the loss of jobs through the business policy of ÖIAG, which he called the “privatization agency for state property” . This undertaking was crowned with success: both companies remained independent. In the spring of 2015, the National Council also decided that ÖIAG should be converted into a limited liability company called Österreichische Bundes- und Industriebeteiligungen GmbH (ÖBIB ), which - in contrast to ÖIAG - should again follow the instructions of the owner, i.e. the republic Austria, is bound.

In October 2015, when reports about the total privatization of Telekom Austria became public for the first time, Hebenstreit asked the "hobby winemaker" (Minister of Finance, note) Schelling to pour "pure wine" for the population (note: Schelling is the tenant of the monastery winery in Herzogenburg )

After the railway accident in Bad Aibling in February 2016, Hebenstreit pointed to insufficiently regulated training criteria in the European railway system and called on the EU Commission to create uniform standards for the training of safety-relevant railway professions across Europe, analogous to the Austrian railway suitability and examination regulations .
