Ronald Haeberle

Ronald L. Haeberle (*  1941 ) is a former American Army photographer for the United States Army . He took part in the Vietnam War on March 16, 1968 as an official army reporter in a mission in the South Vietnamese village of Sơn Mỹ (called Mỹ Lai ), which went down in history as the Mỹ Lai massacre . Haeberle was commissioned to document the body count of alleged Viet Cong rebels .

On December 5, 1969, an article with photos about the massacre first appeared in the American Life magazine . Haeberle had previously sold photos of the mission to the magazine for $ 50,000. The photos led to a turning point in public opinion on the Vietnam War and a legal battle over the war crime .

Haeberle returned to Vietnam as a tourist in 2000 and 2011. He now lives near Cleveland in the US state of Ohio.
