Ronaldo Schemidt

Ronaldo Schemidt (* 1971 in Caracas , Venezuela ) is a Venezuelan photographer .

Schemidt first studied anthropology at the Universidad Central de Venezuela in Caracas. Before graduating in this subject, he decided to emigrate to Mexico and study photography there. Since 2003 he has been working as a photo reporter for various Mexican newspapers. From 2004 he worked as a freelancer with the French news agency Agence France-Presse (AFP) and in 2006 got a job at the AFP office in Mexico City . Schemidt documented sporting events and the drug war in Mexico with his work .

From around 2013, Schemidt worked increasingly in his home country Venezuela. His subjects included the death of former President Hugo Chávez , the 2013 presidential election in Venezuela and, above all, the political and social unrest that followed this election. One of his photographs from this context was selected as Press Photo of the Year 2017. On May 3, 2017, Schemidt photographed the 28-year-old José Víctor Salazar Balza during violent protests against President Nicolás Maduro . The young man's clothes, wearing a respirator, caught fire when the tank of a motorcycle exploded next to him. Jury member Whitney C. Johnson emphasized the symbolic power of the photo with the man: "He not only represents himself and himself burning, but also the idea of ​​a burning Venezuela."

Schemidt's photographic work has been presented several times in group and individual exhibitions at the National Autonomous University of Mexico .
