Rosalina Tuyuc Velásquez (* 1956 in San Juan Comalapa in Chimaltenango ) is a Guatemalan human rights activist .

She was elected Congresswoman in 1995 to represent the New Guatemala Democratic Front national list and was Vice President of Congress during that time. Tuyuc is a Cakchiquel Maya .

In June 1982 the Guatemalan army kidnapped and murdered her father, Francisco Tuyuc. Three years later, on May 24, 1985, her husband suffered the same fate. In 1988 she founded the National Association of Guatemalan Widows (CONAVIGUA) , which has developed into one of the leading Guatemalan human rights organizations.

On July 6, 2004, she was appointed by President Óscar Berger to chair the National Reparations Commission (Comisión Nacional de Resarcimiento). In 2011 she publicly criticized the commission for failing to adequately address the damage caused by the war.

Honors

In 1994 Tuyuc was made a member of the French Legion of Honor for its humanitarian activities . The Niwano Peace Foundation in Japan awarded Tuyuc the 2012 Niwano Peace Prize "in recognition of her exceptional and persistent work for peace as a courageous human rights activist and leader."
