In the southern entrance to Antarctic Sound , it is west of Dundee Island . The island has striking cliffs made of volcanic rock and rises in the center to 435 m in the form of a snow-capped mountain.
They were discovered by participants in the Third French Antarctic Expedition (1837-1840) under the direction of polar explorer Jules Dumont d'Urville . D'Urville named it after the French Minister of the Navy at the time, Claude du Campe de Rosamel (1774–1848), who had entrusted him with carrying out the research trip.
