Rose Mukantabana

Rose Mukantabana (born August 31, 1961 in Nyanza District , Southern Province , Rwanda ) is a Rwandan lawyer, women's rights activist and politician. Mukantabana was the first female president of the Rwandan Chamber of Deputies . From 2013 to 2015 she chaired the African Parliamentary Union .

Life

Rose Mukantabana was born on August 31, 1961 in the Nyanza District in the Rwandan Southern Province. After graduating from school, Mukantabana began to work as a civil servant, initially at the state insurance company and later at the Ministry of Public Service.

In 1992 Mukantabana decided to study law afterwards and attended the University of Rwanda until 1996. She then started working as a legal assistant for the NGO Haguruka Association. Haguruka is a non-governmental organization that works primarily for women's and children's rights. She worked in the organization for more than nine years, most recently as coordinator of the legal department or in the management. Mukantabana decided to study again and completed a postgraduate degree with a specialization in human rights at the Université Saint-Louis Bruxelles .

In 2002 she moved to Pro-Femmes, an association that coordinates the work of a total of 43 NGOs in the field of women's development and rights in Rwanda as deputy chairwoman. In 2005, she switched to the Women's Legal Rights Initiative , financed by USAID , and in 2007 to ActionAid International Rwanda .

In 2008, Rose Mukantabana was elected to the Chamber of Deputies in the Rwandan parliamentary elections in the Kigali constituency. The MPs then elected her Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies - she was the first Rwandan woman to hold this office. In 2012 she was elected Chair of the African Parliamentary Union for a three-year term. Mukantaba was also re-elected to the Chamber of Deputies in the 2013 parliamentary election, but not again to the post of President of Parliament, which her successor Donatille Mukabalisa took over.
