The Church of the Roses is located in the northeastern part of the Belgrade Fortress . At the time of Stefan Lazarević in the early 15th century there was a church of the same name. This was destroyed during the Ottoman conquest of Belgrade in 1521. The present church was originally a powder magazine and was built in the 18th century. After the Ottomans handed the Belgrade fortress over to the Principality of Serbia in 1867, the aforementioned powder magazine was initially converted into a military church. After the turmoil of the First World War, when the church was badly damaged, especially in the apse and the church tower, the Rosenkirche was restored and rebuilt in 1925. The iconostasis was made by Kosta Todorović, the icons were painted by the monk Rafailo Momčilović, while the frescoes were painted by the Russian painter Andrei Bicenko .
