The Rosary Basilica ( Spanish Basílica Menor de Nuestra Señora del Rosario ), previously the Church of St. Dominic , is a Roman Catholic church in the historic center of Guatemala City , the capital of Guatemala . It belongs to the Archdiocese of Santiago de Guatemala and is consecrated to Mary as Queen of the Rosary and bears the title of a minor basilica .

prehistory

The current church is the third that the Dominicans have built since arriving in Guatemala in 1529 under the direction of Domingo de Betanzos. The first small Dominican church was built in Ciudad Vieja when the city was destroyed by the floods of the Agua volcano on the night of September 10-11, 1541 . In order to prevent further accidents, it was decided to relocate the city to what is now Antigua Guatemala .

The Dominicans received land from the authorities for the construction of the new church and monastery. They began construction in 1548 which, due to limited resources, took 118 years to complete in 1666. The damage caused by the earthquake of September 29, 1717 could be repaired. But the earthquake of July 29, 1773 destroyed both the church and most of the capital, which was subsequently moved to its present location. On the site of the former monastery there is a luxury hotel.

As early as January 1776, the Dominicans were given today's space to build a new church and monastery. Pedro Garci-Aguirre directed the construction as a volunteer engineer, died in 1809 a year after the completion of the church and was buried in a niche in the presbytery.

Construction work began at the beginning of February 1788, and the foundations were laid at the beginning of 1790. The church, already in use before its completion, was opened in November 1808.

The first severe earthquakes damaged the church and the monastery in 1917, the church was rebuilt with the support of the Dominican associations. Pope Paul VI elevated the church to a minor basilica on January 28, 1969 under the new patronage of the Blessed Virgin of the Rosary . After the earthquake of February 4, 1976, the church had to be closed for reconstruction. On Sunday, September 30, 1979, the images of Jesus, the Good Death, the Virgin of the Rosary and St. Dominic transferred back to the basilica.
