The Roseraie de Saverne is a rosarium in Zabern in Alsace . Zabern also describes itself as the city of roses.

history

The rosarium was founded in 1898. The initiative came from the rose breeder Louis Walter, who founded the sponsoring association “Amis des Roses” that year. His monument is on the site of the Rosarium. In the first six months the number of members rose from 25 to 90. In 1911 the park was expanded for the first time. In the same year, the city and park were flown over by the aviation pioneer Léon Leconte. A monument in the park is also dedicated to Leconte. For the 25th anniversary, the association had 2000 members and the first flower parade and international rose competition was held. More than 30,000 visitors took part in the pageant. In 1931 President Raymond Poincaré visited the Rosarium. In 2003 the Rosarium was awarded by the "Fédération Mondiale des Sociétés de la Rose".

The city has been sponsoring the Rosarium since 2004. The association continues to exist as a development association.

The park

The park was planned by the Trier rose grower Peter Lambert (Zabern was then part of the realm of Alsace-Lorraine ). It is located south of the Zorn River in a depression a few meters below the Route de Paris, which borders the park to the east. Due to the low location, there are slopes on the edges of the park overgrown with low roses. In the center of the park there is a classical pavilion which is used for events. The park shows around 8,500 roses, which are divided into 550 varieties.
