The Túnel do Rossio , in English "Rossio Tunnel", is the connecting tunnel between the inner-city Lisbon Rossio train station and the Campolide train station on the Linha de Cintura . The tunnel also forms the first kilometers of the famous Linha de Sintra .

The double-track tunnel is 2613 meters long and 6 meters high below the vaulted ceiling. The tunnel has a maximum incline of one percent, from the beginning of the tunnel at Campolide station it goes downhill about 24-26 meters.

The construction work for the tunnel began in 1887. The first test trains through the new tunnel could not run until April 8, 1889; the official opening of the future main station and thus the tunnel took place on June 11, 1890. The cost of building the station and the tunnel amounted to 730,000 Réis. The tunnel is considered to be one of the most important structures in Portuguese engineering of the 19th century. The 200,000 cubic meters of earth that was created when the tunnel was excavated was later built on the banks of the Tejo between Cais do Sodré and Santos.

In 2004, the National Laboratory for Civil Engineering ( Laboratório Nacional de Engenharia Civil ) found that the roof of the Rossio Tunnel had severe cracks, so REFER and the Portuguese Ministry of Transport decided to completely renovate the tunnel and the station building. The station and the tunnel have been closed since October 22, 2004, and since then the Linha de Sintra trains have traveled via the Linha de Cintura to the Lisbon-Oriente station and beyond.

During the renovation work, the station received a new concrete tunnel ceiling and a fixed track bed. In addition, the executing REFER created a connecting tunnel for emergencies between the railway tunnel and the Túnel do Marquês motorway tunnel . REFER had initially announced the reopening for 2006. It finally took place on February 16, 2008.
