The scutum rostrale or the rostral shield , mostly abbreviated as rostrale , is a scalp of the head of snakes and other scale creeping animals . It is the unpaired scale in the middle of the tip of the snout, directly above the mouth opening. So it is facing the mental of the lower jaw. The upper lip shields or supralabials adjoin the mouth opening . Depending on the species, the paired nasorostralia or only the nasals lie above the rostral .
The name "Rostrale" comes from the name Rostrum for the nose. Like all other head shields, their shape, size and training are important determinants within the snake system . Occasionally the trunk bone of pigs ( Os rostrale ) is casually referred to as "Rostrale".
