The red-legged plant beetle ( Hymenalia rufipes ) is a beetle from the subfamily of the plant beetles (Alleculinae) within the family of the black beetles (Tenebrionidae).

features

The beetles are 8 to 9 millimeters long. Their brown body is elongated oval. Sometimes it can also be colored black. He has yellow hair. The wing covers are only streaked inside and at the end with weak furrows, the dots are not arranged in rows. The antennae and legs are red.

Occurrence

The species occurs in parts of Europe. It is widespread in Central Europe but not very common. In the south their occurrence extends to southern France, Italy and Sardinia , in the north to the Baltic States (Latvia) and via Denmark to southern Sweden and southern Norway.

Way of life

The red-legged plant beetle prefers warm, dry steppe locations as habitat, especially pine heather. The beetles fly between June and August. They are extremely nocturnal and are often attracted to artificial light sources. The larvae develop in decayed branches of deciduous trees.
