history

The Bavarian Elector Maximilian II had the Red Barracks built on the western city wall in 1702 for the soldiers stationed in Memmingen after he had taken the city after a siege. The Black Barracks built at the same time burned down in 1898. Soon, however, Memmingen became a Free Imperial City again , making the barracks superfluous. Since then, apartments have been housed in the Red Barracks.
