The Red Castle is in the city of Weimar in Thuringia .

history

The Red Castle was built from 1574 to 1576 as the widow's seat of the Duchess Dorothea Susanne . The coat of arms of the born von der Pfalz and Duke Johann Wilhelm I of Weimar-Eisenach adorns the building.

Members of the princely family and the court later lived in the castle, from 1702 to 1703 Johann Sebastian Bach . After that, public facilities were housed. The Secret Council, to which Goethe belonged , met in the west wing . The court marshal's office, the administration of justice and the state administration were still housed. The Princely Drawing School was located in the east wing from 1781 to 1807.

The redesign of Fürstenplatz in 1808 resulted in the demolition of the east wing. The gap was not closed until 1820. The classicist blind arcades by Clemens Wenzeslaus Coudray were created . They formed an ensemble with the Residenzschloss and Princely House (today the University of Music ) and the Duchess Anna Amalia Library .

Today the research library and the modern study center of the Duchess Anna Amalia Library are housed in the Red Palace.
