Red rot

Red rot on spruce

The red rot is a form of the wood rot , which is to be assigned to the white rot in the narrower sense , since primarily the lignin content of the wood is destroyed. It got its misleading name due to an initially reddish discoloration that is associated with damage to the wood.

In addition to wound rot and honey fungus , the root sponge ( Heterobasidion annosum ), especially on spruce, is the most important pathogen of this tree disease for conifers in Europe.
