Rothley Castle

Rothley Castle is a ruined castle in the village of Rothley in the English county of Northumberland . The Gothic Folly , built in the 18th century, has English Heritage as a historical building II *. Grade listed.

It was designed in 1755 by architect Daniel Garrett for Sir Walter Blackett , the owner of Wallington Hall . From there you can see Rothley Castle on the horizon. A real medieval tower, the Rothley Tower near Folly, was probably demolished in the early 19th century.

A similar Gothic folly, also part of Wallington Hall's estate, is Codger Fort , perched on cliffs about 1 mile north of Rothley Castle. It is shaped like a triangular gun battery and was designed by Thomas Wright of Durham .

Both Wallington Hall and Rothley Castle are now administered by the National Trust .
