The red cabbage weaver ( Malimbus nitens ), also known as the red-throated splendor weaver , is a species from the family of weaver birds (Ploceidae). The species is occasionally kept as an ornamental bird in Europe.

The red throat weaver reaches a body length of 17 cm. The throat and chest are bright red. The eyes are also red in color. The rest of the plumage is shiny black. The two sexes are similar, but the female is matt black on the underside of the body instead of shiny black. The beak is steel blue in both sexes.

Red throat weavers build spherical nests with a long hanging hole and an antechamber. It is built from strips of leaves and fibers on trees. The clutch consists of two eggs on average.

The distribution area of ​​the red cabbage weaver is West Africa and extends there from Guinea to Gabon and towards the Republic of the Congo . Its diet includes fruits and insects.
