The red-headed quail ( Haematortyx sanguiniceps ) is a species from the pheasant-like family. It is the only recent representative of its genus and occurs exclusively in Borneo.

Appearance

The red-headed quail reaches a body length of 25 centimeters and weighs an average of 330 grams. The sexual dimorphism is not particularly pronounced. Males have bright red heads, necks and chest. The rest of the plumage is soot black, only the end of the under tail cover is also red. Females are duller in color and overall brown. The color distribution is otherwise the same as that of the male. The beak is yellowish or yellowish white or in the females brownish horn-colored. The iris is brown. The legs are gray. The males have up to three spurs each on their legs.

distribution and habitat

The red-headed quail occurs exclusively in the mountains in northern Borneo. The species is considered potentially endangered due to habitat loss. However, it is still common in suitable habitats. It mainly inhabits the forests at the foot of mountains. It is usually found at altitudes between 1000 and 1500 meters.

Way of life

The diet of the red-headed quail consists of berries and insects. However, the species does not scratch particularly intensely. The reproductive habits are largely unknown. The clutch consists of eight to nine eggs. The breeding season in human care is between 18 and 19 days.
