In 1997 the museum was founded with a smaller exhibition of privately collected exhibits bearing the Red Cross symbol .

From 2000 the museum had an exhibition area of ​​100 m².

In 2007, the association "Red Cross History Collection in Westphalia-Lippe eV - Museum" was founded in Bad Lippspringe. The purpose of the association is the promotion of art and culture, in particular the acquisition of historically significant objects and the collection of general exhibition and equipment items of the Red Cross, the operation and promotion of an affiliated museum and archive to the history of the Red Cross in general and especially in the To research and document the area of ​​the DRK regional association Westphalia-Lippe as well as the dissemination of humanitarian ideas as part of the public relations work of the German Red Cross.

In 2010 the Rotkreuzmuseum was given a building for use by the community of Schlangen. After the renovation, the museum moved from Bad Lippspringe to Schlangen in 2012.

The inauguration of the museum in the community of Schlangen took place on March 16, 2013.

The collection now has 212 m 2 of exhibition space, plus 110 m 2 of magazine and a further 80 m 2 of archive.

With a certificate dated July 16, 2018, the Red Cross History Collection was recognized as a state museum by the DRK regional association Westphalia-Lippe.

The Red Cross History Collection Our Red Cross: yesterday ... today ... documents the diverse history of the international Red Cross movement and the red crescent worldwide . From historic Red Cross and army postal service maps to orders , decorations and certificates from old uniforms to training and information materials of local and international origin, the arc of the more than 150-year history spanning the Red Cross. Films on the history and work of the Red Cross are also shown. The archive and library collect material on the development of the Red Cross in Westphalia-Lippe.

The archive collects documents, certificates, ID cards, posters, press reports and the like on the history of the Red Cross in Westphalia-Lippe. The old guest books of the "Bernhard Salzmann" state school in Münster are also already archived in the museum. In the meantime, more than 200 festival publications from Westphalia-Lippe and far more than 150 from the rest of Germany have been archived in the museum. The museum received a special document in 2007: an American newspaper dated July 30, 1859 with an eyewitness account of the Battle of Solferino, along with other old RK books.

The basis is the coat of arms of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. The left half was replaced by the Red Cross underneath with the 'M' (for museum). The Westphalia horse and the Lippe rose are preserved.

The museum also offers on-site exhibitions on the occasion of anniversaries, campaign weeks, conferences and the like.
