history

A photo of the Rotkreuz Museum vogelsang ip at night

Significant parts of the over 100 soccer field large facility visible today were built by the National Socialists in 1934 as the NS Ordensburg Vogelsang with the aim of training selected party officials here.

From 1946 to December 2005 it was the center (camp) of an initially British, then Belgian military training area.

Today the site is a versatile place in the Eifel National Park , which has many visitors because of its nature, culture, history and education.

vogelsang ip and the "Kameradschaftshaus 10"

With the transition of the Belgian military training area Camp Vogelsang to civil use in 2006, after 60 years of military use, a new era began:

The military training area was given over to nature as part of the Eifel National Park , while the camp, the built-up area of the former NS-Ordensburg or the barracks, is now used for information, recreation and diverse learning.

The use of the "Kameradschaftshaus 10" as a place for dealing with human rights and with international humanitarian law is an essential contribution. In the former accommodation of the "NS-Ordensjunker" as well as in the more than 50-year-old use as team accommodation and canteen for the exercising soldiers of the post-war era, visitors can now get an overview of the international humanitarian work of the world's largest humanitarian organization, the Red Cross. The volunteer-run Rotkreuz Museum is an integral part of the educational landscape that has been created on the vogelsang ip site since 2006.

Red Cross - a worldwide humanitarian movement

The history of the Red Cross movement

In 1859 the businessman Henry Dunant witnessed the cruel consequences of the war between the army of Austria and the troops of Piedmont-Sardinia and France after the Battle of Solferino . Deeply shocked by the nearly 40,000 wounded and dying on the battlefield, he organized civil aid together with the villagers. After this moving event, the “International Committee of Aid Societies for the Care of the Wound” was founded in Geneva in 1863 and the first Geneva Convention was signed a year later . This was the beginning of today's worldwide Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement .

In the exhibition, visitors are shown a variety of exhibits from the Red Cross work and their function is explained on blackboards. The pictures and exhibits illustrate a wide variety of work areas, from a field operation area to emergency vehicles for the mountain rescue service.

The youth red cross - youth that moves

Young visitors

Over 113,000 young members are involved in the German Youth Red Cross (JRK) for health, the environment, peace and international understanding. Since the 1990s, the Youth Red Cross has been running campaigns on topics for young people, for example on future opportunities for young people or child poverty in Germany. The educational offers cover the topics of first aid, school medical services , health promotion, international humanitarian law and social engagement.

In the exhibition, visitors learn a lot about the committed social work in the Youth Red Cross, such as aid projects for those affected in crisis regions, social initiatives and campaigns, dispute settlement and school medical services.

Special exhibitions

Detour Prague 1989

A special component is the special exhibition "Detour Prague - The Prague Embassy Refugees in Autumn '89 in the Federal German Embassy in Prague " of the German-German Museum Mödlareuth . It illustrates the story of the beginning of the end of the division of Germany and the Iron Curtain in Europe. In several waves in 1989 up to 10,000 GDR citizens found refuge at the same time on the premises of the Bonn embassy in Prague until the East German regime was allowed to leave the country - and were taken care of there under the most difficult logistical conditions by, among others, the Euskirchen Red Cross members Angelika and Herbert Schmitz .

Angelika Schmitz's diary about her Red Cross catering assignment on the embassy premises serves as an important source for this presentation. Five media stations provide information about the fate of twelve families and illustrative material from the time when the Cold War came to an end in Europe.

Children of our world

Children are also often the ones most affected by disasters and wars. The photo documentation "Children of Our World" shows impressive and depressing photos of Red Cross helpers from all over the world.

Commitment today - the new civil society
