The Roxburgh Dam is a dam in the Otago region of the South Island of New Zealand that dams the Clutha River to Lake Roxburgh near the municipality of Roxburgh . The dam, built together with the hydroelectric power station, was completed in 1956 and was the largest construction project New Zealand had ever undertaken.

geography

The Roxburgh Dam is located around 15 km south of Alexandra and a good 100 km northwest of Dunedin , the capital of Otago , in the bed of the Clutha River .

operator

Overflow

The operator of the power plant and responsible for the Roxburgh Dam is Contact Energy , the second largest electricity producer in New Zealand after Meridian Energy .

Technical specifications

The dam is 358 m wide and 48 m high. It dams the Clutha River on a length of 28.5 km up to 667 m width. Around half a million cubic meters of concrete were used for the dam and the power station building. The water flow, which can be between 225,000 and 722,000 liters / second, drives the eight turbines of the hydropower plant, with a nominal output of 320 MW. The 136.4  rev / min. rotating turbines can generate a voltage of 110 kV or 220 kV as required  .

history

Lake Roxburgh

Construction of the dam began in 1949, but it was not until 1956 that the reservoir was ready for use with the completion of Roxburgh Dam . Commissioning up to maximum output and capacity took another five years until 1961. In 2009 the Contact Energy company successfully applied for the lake level to be raised by 60 cm.
