The Royal Dragoon Guards (RDG) are a cavalry - regiment of the British Army , formed by merging the 1992 4th / 7th Royal Dragoon Guards and the 5th Royal Inniskilling Dragoon Guards was created. The regiment is based in Catterick , North Yorkshire . The Royal Dragoon Guards were active in both Iraq and Afghanistan. The regiment's soldiers come from Northern England and Ireland, but mainly from Yorkshire .
