The Royal Enfield 650 is a motorcycle from the Indian motorcycle manufacturer Royal Enfield , which emerged from a British manufacturer of guns , motorcycles and automobiles .
It is a motorcycle in retro style with SOHC -Paralleltwin engine, the Royal Enfield (India) in England ( Leicestershire ) developed, announced in 2017 and 2018 introduced to the market. It is the company's first modern parallel twin motorcycle.
In 2017 the company unveiled a new motorcycle that revives the 1960s name "Interceptor".
The model, which has been available since 2019, is built in two versions:
- as an undisguised street motorcycle (roadster) "Interceptor" in the conventional style and
- as a so-called café racer "Continental GT".
Both versions are identical in terms of engine, frame, suspension, wheels, brakes and silencers.
The motorcycle is marketed in India, Europe and the USA.
Engine and chassis
engine
Technically, the Interceptor is based on a construction from the 1960s. However, unlike the British engines of the time, the engine does not have a side camshaft and bumpers , but despite its old-fashioned appearance is a modern design with an overhead camshaft , four valves per cylinder and an oil-cooled cylinder head. It is adapted to today's emission regulations . The two-cylinder in- line engine has air-cooled cylinders, 648 cm³ displacement with a stroke of 67.8 and a bore of 78 mm, wet sump lubrication and a gear-driven balance shaft in front of the crankshaft. A large oil cooler is built into the frame lower tubes. Bosch supplies the gasoline injection system and the engine management computer with map control. The low compression ratio of 9.5: 1 helps the engine to handle low octane fuel. The two cranks of the crankshaft are offset by 90 degrees, which results in an unequal ignition interval of 270 and 450 degrees ( crossplane ).
The power is transmitted to the rear wheel via a clutch that runs coaxially with the crankshaft, a six-speed gearbox and a chain.
With an initial 35 kW (47 bhp, 47.65 PS) at 7100 rpm and 52 Nm at 5200 rpm, the engine can be further developed: The bike magazine reported that “the considerable bearing surface of the crankshaft and the strong aluminum crankcase on it indicate that the engine can comfortably deliver more power. Compression, displacement and speed could be increased for future models ”.
landing gear
The chassis is a tubular frame with two beams. The front wheel is guided on a standard telescopic fork (with or without bellows), the rear wheel on a swing arm with spring struts. The braking system has an anti-lock braking system . The diameter of the brake discs is 320 mm at the front and 240 mm at the rear. The instruments are conventional analog round instruments.
Interceptor
The Interceptor is a conventionally designed street motorcycle ("Roadster") with a double seat, a rounded 13.7 liter saddle tank with a Royal Enfield emblem and a Monza-style fuel cap. The braced handlebars allow an upright sitting position. There is a tubular handrail for the passenger. The Interceptor is marketed as the INT650 in the United States, where Honda has a trademark on the name "Interceptor".
Continental GT
The Café Racer Continental GT has either a standard double bench seat or, optionally, a solo seat with a hump seat. The fuel tank is more angular than that of the roadster. Handlebars and rear footrests enable a sportier seating position. The Continental GT has less chrome than the Interceptor.
Evaluation in the press
The Interceptor received positive reviews from Motorcycle News. “Overall, the Royal Enfield Interceptor is great. The engine is lively without being intimidating, the handling is fun without patronizing, and the finish is good without breaking the bank. ”The engine, brakes and equipment of the bike received praise, but the chassis was heavily criticized because it is too soft and underdamped. The Australian website MC-News gave a favorable report. A report from "Motorrad Online" criticized the uncomfortable seat and the handling of the side stand after 15,000 km in an endurance test that was designed to cover 50,000 km. The rebound stage of the rear struts was criticized as being severely overdamped.
