The Royal Indian Navy (RIN) comprised the naval forces of British India . It formed a part of the armed forces alongside the British Indian Army and, from 1932, also the Indian Air Force .

history

Its origins lay in the East India Company's Navy of the British East India Company, founded in 1612 . The name of the British naval units in India changed frequently, Bombay Marine , Her Majesty's Indian Navy , Her Majesty's Indian Marine and Royal Indian Marine . In 1934 it was named Royal Indian Navy . This was greatly expanded in the course of the Second World War. The RIN has been involved in operations in both the Mediterranean ( Operation Husky ) and the Pacific . On February 18, 1946, the sailors in Bombay revolted against British rule.

After the partition of India in 1947, parts of the equipment and personnel were handed over to the then Royal Pakistan Navy . With the conversion of India into a republic on January 26, 1950, the Royal Indian Navy was renamed the Indian Navy .
