The Royal Institute of Oil Painters , also known as ROI , is an artists' association based in London that exclusively exhibits oil paintings .

The Royal Institute of Oil Painters was founded in 1882 and was granted royal status by King Edward VII in 1909. Membership is limited to about 65. Each member can only be accepted by appointment. Renowned artists are initially elected as associates for a period of five years. During this time they can get full membership. Well-known artists of the association are Lawrence Alma-Tadema , Walter Sickert , Laura Knight , Henri Fantin-Latour , Alexander Mann and Auguste Rodin .

ROI is one of nine companies that have joined forces to form the Federation of British Artists . Meetings will be held in the Mall Galleries near Trafalgar Square .
