The Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM) is a conservatory in Manchester , United Kingdom. It is on Oxford Road in downtown Manchester and on the western edge of the Manchester University campus . In addition to education, the RNCM offers concerts , operas, and other musical events. The current director is clarinetist Linda Merrick and the artistic director is Maltese conductor Michelle Castelletti .

The Conservatory's roots emerged in the late 19th century with Sir Charles Hallé's Royal Manchester College of Music . Today's RNCM was created through the merger of the Royal Manchester College of Music and the Northern School of Music in 1973.

It currently offers both undergraduate studies and postgraduate studies in performance and composition .

According to 2007 figures, the RNCM has 696 students, 496 of them studying for the Bachelor's degree and 200 for the Master's degree. 49% of all students are male and 51% female. With a number of 265, the academic staff is exceptionally large in relation to the students. Many teachers also teach at the Junior RNCM, a Saturday music school for talented young musicians who want to pursue a musical career.

Notable graduates include the opera director and founder of the Birmingham Opera Company , Graham Vick .
