Medical and Surgical Society of London

The Medical and Surgical Society of London was a London scholarly society of doctors and surgeons founded in 1805 . It existed until 1907 and is one of the predecessor societies of the Royal Society of Medicine .

history

On May 22, 1805, 26 members of the Medical Society of London , founded in 1773, met who were dissatisfied with the autocratic leadership by its President James Sims (1741-1820). They decided to found their own society, which was to serve the purpose of exchanging experiences on their subject area, receiving communications and establishing a library.

Its first president was Sir William Saunders (1743-1817). John Abernethy , William Babington , Sir William Blizard (1743-1835) and John Cooke (1756-1838) became Vice Presidents, Sir Astley Cooper Treasurer and Charles Rochemont Aikin (1775-1847) Secretary.

In 1834 the company received the Royal Charter and was renamed the Royal Medical and Surgical Society of London . From 1907 to 1909 the society merged with other specialty societies to form the Royal Society of Medicine .
