Royal Society of South Africa

The Royal Society of South Africa is a scholarly society in the Republic of South Africa . It includes both elected South African members ( Fellows ) and foreign honorary members (Honorary Fellows). South African scientists can also apply for membership. The company is based in Cape Town .

After the end of the Second Boer War (1899–1902), negotiations began in South Africa for several years to establish a Royal Society of South Africa (RSSAf), which was based on various predecessor societies. Finally, in 1908, the official founding act took place through a Royal Charter from King Edward VII. The first president of the RSSAf was the astronomer Sydney Samuel Hough , the mathematician Thomas Muir and the veterinarian Arnold Theiler were elected as vice-presidents . The part of the name "South Africa" ​​included a geographical region between Cape Town and the Limpopo river .

In addition to its headquarters in Cape Town, the RSSAf has branches in various provinces in South Africa. Currently (as of August 2020) the RSSAf has 30 honorary members.

The RSSAf publishes a journal which has been published since 1909 (Vol. 1) with the title Transactions of the Royal Society of South Africa (Trans. R. Soc. S. Afr.). There are historical roots to the Transactions of the South African Philosophical Society (Trans. S. Afr. Philos. Soc.) Published between 1878 and 1909 .
