The Rußbartvogel ( Gymnobucco sladeni ) is a bird art from the family of the African barbets. The inconspicuous brown colored species occurs in Central Africa on both sides of the equator. No subspecies are distinguished. The IUCN classifies the species as not endangered ( least concern ).

Appearance

The males reach a wing length of 7.6 to 8.8 centimeters. The tail length is 4.2 to 4.8 centimeters. The beak reaches a length of 1.9 to 2.1 centimeters. Females have similar body measurements. There is no noticeable sexual dimorphism .

Males and females have a gray to brownish-gray back of the head and neck and an equally colored throat. The face is largely featherless and black, it only has a few individual, hair-like black feathers with light shafts. There are some reddish-brown bristles at the base of the beak. The top of the body is dark brown. The control springs are black to dark brown. The underside of the body is also dark brown from the chest to the coverts of the tail. The beak is matt black, the upper beak and the tip of the beak are a bit lighter in many individuals. The eyes are light to dark red. The legs and feet are black, brown, or dark gray. Young birds are similar to adult birds, but their bristle-like feathers at the base of their beak are slightly darker and the face is slightly more feathered.

There is a possibility of confusion with the bearded bird . The soot-whiskered bird, however, is somewhat smaller and, above all, has a largely featherless face. The distribution areas of the soot-whiskered bird and the bristle-whiskered bird do not overlap. The sootbeard bird differs from this species belonging to the same genus, among other things, by its darker plumage, the larger and darker beak, the gray-colored neck and the gray throat.

Distribution area, habitat and way of life

The soot-whiskered bird is not a common bird in the forested regions of the DR Congo and the southwest of the Central African Republic. Very little is known about his way of life. It is occasionally associated with the bearded bird. Its food spectrum includes fruits and insects. Nothing is known about reproductive biology. Young birds were observed from May to September. Moulting adults are occupied from the months of March, June, August and September.
