Sooty Friday

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As sooty Friday refers to the Friday (also Carnival Friday ) before Ash Wednesday , after the Schmotzigen Thursday and before the narrow Zigen Saturday .

The term is mainly used in the Swabian-Alemannic Fastnacht (i.e. in Baden-Württemberg , Vorarlberg and Switzerland ), but also in the Bavarian administrative district of Swabia .

The name comes from the fact that earlier that day the fools tried to smear soot on people's faces. Today the custom is still very popular with children.

In Upper Swabia and Vorarlberg, the day is also called Bromiger Friday: on this day, boys used to blacken the girls' faces with soot and blackberries or blackberry jam.
