The soot mamo ( Drepanis funerea ), also known as the black mamo or Oo-nuku-umu by the Hawaiians , is an extinct Hawaiian hawk bird .

description

The soot mamo reached a length of 20 cm. The plumage was generally dull black. The wings of the hand had gray edges. The bill and legs were black. The long beak was curved into a sickle shape. The upper half of the beak towered over the lower half of the beak. The male's beak was longer than that of the female.

Occurrence and way of life

The soot mamo was endemic to the undergrowth and middle tree regions of the rainforests on Moloka'i . It never flew more than ten feet above the ground. His diet consisted of nectar from the Hawaiian lobelia and Ohiʻa trees. He was a curious and trusting bird. Little is known about its breeding biology, except that it built its nests in the undergrowth, where the ground was soft and muddy.

die out

When it was discovered by Robert Cyril Layton Perkins in 1893, the soot mamo was described as very rare. In June 1907 ornithologist William Alanson Bryan collected the last three specimens. Possible reasons for its extinction were the destruction of the undergrowth vegetation by deer and cattle as well as eggs and nestlings being eaten by imported mongooses and rats.
