Ruadhelm

Ruadhelm (* 8th or 9th century; † around 857) was abbot of the Reichenau monastery from 838 to 842 .

Live and act

Little is known about Ruadhelm, who took over the management of Reichenau Abbey in 838. Nevertheless, his abbatiat is sufficiently documented. He was a monk of the island monastery before he was elected as his successor after Erlebald's resignation from the convent members, citing the right to freely elect a abbot. With this election, the monastic community anticipated the wish of Louis the Pious , who at the same time appointed Walahfrid Strabo as abbot.

However, Walahfrid was initially unable to assert himself against Ruadhelm, because although he too came from the convent of the Reichenau monastery, his confreres opposed the emperor's decision. Nevertheless, the monastery annals let Walahfrids abbot dignity begin as early as 838, while in the abbot catalog and in the chronicle of Hermann the Lame from 838 Ruadhelm is listed as abbot. This contradiction must also be seen against the background of the Carolingian fratricidal wars . After the death of Louis the Pious there was a dispute between his sons about the division of the empire. Walahfrid, who took the side of Lothar I , was forced to leave the Reichenau monastery, which was under the control of Ludwig the German . Ruadhelm, on the other hand, was a supporter of Ludwig the German and headed the abbey until Walahfrid was reconciled with Ludwig, returned to Reichenau in 842 and was now able to assert himself against the incumbent abbot.

Like his predecessor Erlebald, Ruadhelm was also committed to expanding the monastery library, acquired numerous books and also worked as a scribe himself.

It is not known when Ruadhelm died; However, there is evidence that after his abbatiat he was a monk in Reichenau Monastery for at least twelve years. According to the fraternity book of Reichenau Abbey , the day of his death falls on October 8th. He must have died in 857 at the latest.
