Rubén Yáñez (theater director)

Rubén Yáñez (born March 9, 1929 in Montevideo , Uruguay ; † June 7, 2015 ) was a Uruguayan theater director , actor and lecturer.

The trained teacher ( Maestro ) Rubén Yáñez worked as such in the subjects of philosophy and educational sciences at various schools of the primary level, Liceos as well as at the faculty for humanities and natural sciences (FHC) of the Universidad de la República and at institutes for teacher training.

In the artistic field he worked in various functions. He staged more than 80 different works in various theaters and also directed plays shown on Uruguayan television. He also worked as a lighting technician in over 150 performances and appeared on stage as an actor in more than 100 theater works. Numerous works as a dramaturge are also available for him. In this area he was the co-author of Artigas, General del Pueblo . Yáñez was also responsible for at least twelve books, some of them co-authored. These deal with social and cultural issues as well as theater.

From 1948 to 1964 he worked at the Teatro del Pueblo , between 1962 and 1967 he was Artistic Director ( Director Artístico ) of the Comedia Nacional . From 1970 to 1990 he worked at the Teatro El Galpón and was a member of the ensemble. At that time, as a result of the civil-military dictatorship that was establishing itself in Uruguay, he was banned from any artistic activity in Uruguay from 1975, so that from 1976 to 1984 he was in exile in Mexico with the theater company of El Galpón. Yáñez also worked as a lecturer at the Escuela Municipal de Arte Dramático (EMAD), of which he was director at least at the beginning of the 21st century, as well as at the schools of El Galpón, the Teatro Circular and the Mexican Centro de Capacitación Cinematográfica .

Yáñez was declared Ciudadano Ilustre by the Junta Departamental of Montevideo on April 11, 2012 .
