The rowing community Angaria is a student rowing club in Hanover . Rowing is the core of the community . Is rowed on the line and on the Ihme . The Angaria is a registered association according to § 21 BGB.

history

Angaria was founded as an "Association of Academic Cyclists" in 1886 as a sports corporation, a rather rare association at that time. Even then the colors were green-white-red. The aim of the association was to promote cycling through hiking trips, cycling races and social events. At that time the bicycle was still known under the name "Velociped" and was a novelty for many in the traffic in the quiet official city of Hanover, which was largely dominated by horse-drawn carts, cabs and private equipments.

When the bicycle became more widespread and the club ran out of youngsters, the "Academic Cyclists Association" was suspended in 1898 and the "Academic Football Club" was founded as a successor organization and renamed the "Academic Ball Sports Club" that same year.

In 1902, rowing was officially added to the name. It was renamed “Academic Rowing and Ball Sports Club”, or ARBV Hannover for short . After rowing had almost completely supplanted ball sports activities, the club was renamed the “Academic Rowing Club” (ARV) in 1906, 20 years after the Association of Academic Cyclists was founded. Since then, the future Angaria has remained loyal to rowing.

On July 16, 1927, after heated and contentious debates, the ARV gave itself a new name: Academic Rowing Association "Angaria". The Angars as namesake defeated the Angrivarians , Lombards and other Germanic tribes whose names had also been up for debate. Today's rowing community Angaria Hannover as such was founded on February 24, 1936 after the previous Angaria was banned.

present

The rowing community has its club house at Weddigenufer 25 in Hanover. In addition to two halls for the boat material, there is the possibility for twelve students to live in the clubhouse. The Angaria is divided into the Aktivitas and the old rulers. The old men (and women) have already completed their studies and have made an agreement for a lifelong membership to support students with rowing during their studies.

The Angaria offers many opportunities to practice (rowing) sports. In addition to the weight room with ergometers and spinning bikes, the complete range of Olympic racing boats is available for training. In addition, a sizable fleet of gigs and racing boats can be used in general rowing operations. The organization of the training is done by the active participants.

Regattas at home and abroad are attended throughout the year - from the Head of the River Race in London in spring to the German University Championships in summer to the student regatta in Cannes in autumn. There are also starts on the various student regattas or training camps. Rowing takes place on a six-kilometer stretch of the river Ihme und Leine. Several circular routes can be used for jogging along these waters. It is also possible to use the Hanoverian rudder base on the branch canal. In addition to rowing, the Angaren also do a lot of cycling - not least because of this, the rowers' cycle race (four-man team time trial) takes place every year in October. The sports business is financed by the old rulers.

Some angars have already participated in World Championships or Olympic Games. The first successful Olympian was Gerd Völs , who won the bronze medal in Berlin in 1936 in eighth place. Most recently Elke Hipler started internationally in the colors of Germany.
