Rudolf Waniek KG at Hohen Markt 5 in Vienna

Rudolf Waniek KG was a specialist house and kitchen appliance company in Vienna and a former supplier to the Imperial and Royal Court . The store was located at Hohen Markt 5 in Vienna's 1st district, Innere Stadt .

history

In 1850 Rudolf Waniek founded an “ establishment for kitchen equipment and home comfort ”. He was able to successfully deliver his goods to the imperial Viennese court and was later given the privilege of being a purveyor to the imperial court. It is not exactly documented which goods he delivered to the court, but in the silver chamber of the Hofburg, for example, “Sulzformen” are on display, which Waniek kept according to the supplier's book. Rudolf Waniek had a large circle of aristocratic regular customers, whose descendants still shop in the store to this day.

Rudolf Waniek's son, Herbert Waniek (1897–1949), decided not to follow in his father's footsteps and instead opted for a career as a director. Among other things, he staged in the Burgtheater .

The mother of the current owner worked for Waniek as a saleswoman after the First World War . After Herbert Waniek did not succeed, she took over the business from 1940.

The Hohe Markt was heavily bombed during World War II. The house at Hohen Markt 5 was also hit, but the Waniek store remained undamaged. Waniek was able to recover again in the post-war years and also prevail against rising rental prices that the owner demanded. After the death of the owner Heinrich Sommer in autumn 2015 and the announcement of a massive rent increase, in 2016 Sommer's widow and daughter decided to close the shop.

The shop was known for its many little "helpers" for kitchen and household. Well-known products were biscuit bakers like "Welser Ringerl", "Linzer Ausstecher" and "Wiener". Waniek also sold rare kitchen appliances such as milk guards .
