The Rudolfklippe is a gabbro rock in the Harz National Park .

Geographical location

The Rudolfklippe is located on the northern edge of the Harz Mountains at a maximum height of 570 m, southeast of Bad Harzburg in the Goslar district in Lower Saxony , above the Radau valley in the summit area of the Winterberg. The hiking trail, which connects the Gasthaus am Radauwasserfall with the excursion restaurant Molkenhaus , passes about 50 m from the Rudolfklippe . From this hiking trail, signposted by the Harz Club and the administration of the Haus National Park, a marked branch path leads through the beech forest directly to the cliff.

The middle and upper part of the Rudolfklippe is accessible. The middle area is secured with an iron railing to prevent falling. Larger trees in the immediate vicinity and below the cliff impair the view that was once offered from here on a clear day in the direction of Bad Harzburg and the northern Harz as well as the gabbro quarry on the opposite side of the valley.

Slightly below the Rudolfklippe is the Winterbergklippe , from which there is a better view of the Radau valley and the northern Harz foreland with Bad Harzburg due to less tree cover .

Surname

There are different reports about the naming of the cliff. One of them is that the cliff was named after Duke Rudolf August von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel (1627–1707), who was the sovereign at that time and who stayed several times in what is now Bad Harzburg.
