Rugby Africa Gold Cup trophy

The Rugby Union Africa Championship ( English Rugby Africa Cup ) is a rugby union tournament for national teams held by the African association Rugby Africa , in which the African champions are determined annually. It has been held since 2000, initially under the name CAR Top 9 and CAR Top 10 .

The record winner is the Namibian national rugby union team with eight successes. South Africa as two-time world champions shows little interest in the tournament. In five appearances with a youth team, South Africa won three times.

history

In the first tournament in 2000, only five national teams ( Morocco , Namibia, Zimbabwe , South Africa-B and Tunisia ) took part. In 2004 a tournament for junior nations and U-19 national teams was introduced, the African Development Trophy . In 2011 the best four nations were removed from the competition and competed in division A1 .

format

There have been different formats over the years.

2014 to 2018

From 2014 to 2018, the game was played in a promotion and relegation mode, with Division 1A being the top division, followed by Division 1B and Division 1C . In recent years, these have been called the Africa Gold Cup , Africa Silver Cup , Africa Bronze Cup and Regional Challenge .

Gold Cup : The five best national teams on the continent as well as the winner of the Silver Cup of the previous year. For 2018 these were Kenya , Namibia, Zimbabwe, Tunisia, Uganda and Morocco.

Silver Cup : The participants of the previous year minus the climber in the Gold Cup and the climber in the Bronze Cup . In addition, the relegated from the Gold Cup , the winner and finalist from the Bronze Cup . It is played in two regional leagues.

Bronze Cup : Four nations compete here; the two Bronze Cup participants from the previous year as well as the climber from the Regional Challenge and the climber from the Bronze Cup .

Regional Challenge : Up to 20 national teams.

Since 2019

16 teams compete in a tournament. The winner qualifies for the Rugby Union World Cup . First, the four worst teams on the continent play away against the four second worst teams in Africa. In the second round, the remaining 12 teams are divided into four groups of three teams each. These compete against each other in home and away games. The four group winners compete against each other in a final tournament at one location.
