Pieterlen ruins

The ruin Pieterlen is an abandoned high medieval low castle in the municipality of Pieterlen in the canton of Bern from the 10th century.

Location and description

Today only the castle hill and parts of the moat are visible. You are to the west of the Pieterlen Church. The facility was built on the gravel terrace of a ground moraine of the Rhone glacier . The man-made castle hill was protected on three sides by a moat and followed the course of a natural run . A nearby stream was diverted and led through the moat. The castle consisted of earth walls and wooden palisades .

history

A burial ground from the 5th to 10th centuries found in the immediate vicinity proves that the place was inhabited for a long time. The church must have been built before the castle was built. Between the 10th and 13th centuries, the castle was the ancestral seat of the noble family von Pieterlen. Today the ruins and the church are under monument protection.
