Run and gun

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Run and gun (Eng. " Run and shoot") is a basketball tactic in which the focus is placed on the quick completion of the throw and the opponent is to be "overrun".

description

The basic consideration is that when the game is fast forward, neither attackers nor defenders are properly positioned. In run and gun it is assumed that the defensive penalty of the opponent outweighs the own offensive penalty and is pushed to the quick throw. This requires a good point guard as a pass giver and an athletic, throw-safe teammate as a buyer. The fast break plays a special role . Every opponent's ball loss / own rebound should be used to immediately play forward and quickly get to the throw / dunk.

In run and gun , the offensive dominates. The advantage of the run and gun tactic is the speed with which the moves are completed: opponents with slow players can be "overrun". If the opponent has fast defenders himself, the tactic is ineffective. In addition, this tactic is very exhausting, since a lot of emphasis is placed on athletics.

application

Run and gun was popular with the American Basketball Association , the smaller equivalent of the NBA , in the 1970s . Since there were few centers in the ABA, but athletic wingers like Julius Erving or Rick Barry played, the coaches made this hardship a virtue and built their team strategy into a storm-heavy one. In the 1980s, the Golden State Warriors and the Denver Nuggets were known for this offensive style, but defensively weak. In the 1990s, the Dallas Mavericks under coach Don Nelson and like the Boston Celtics under coach Jim O'Brien played the run and gun tactics.

For the run and gun tactics today are Golden State Warriors under Nelson known who wrote in 2007 basketball history with this tactic in the NBA playoffs by taking the set at position 1 Dallas Mavericks of Dirk Nowitzki defeated. The Phoenix Suns also play run and gun.

Since hard defensive work is seen as the basis of success in basketball, the very offensive run and gun is considered a bit simple-minded. But in the WNBA will run and gun successfully by the Phoenix Mercury under coach Paul Westhead performed. When the Mercury were champions in 2007, he explained that the final opponent Detroit Shock could be put under constant pressure through run and gun and that Mercury ultimately won.

The Nuggets had some decent teams during this time, but without any defense they could never get past the Los Angeles Lakers in the West. @1@ 2Template: Webachiv / IABot / www.galttech.com

  7. Golden State Warriors (1962-present) , quote: It took time to adjust as the new players besides freeing up cap space allowed, Coach Nelson to employ a faster run and gun team ... However, as the series returned to the Oracle Arena in Game 6 it was all Warriors as they completed the historic upset with a 111-86 win
  8. Mike D'Antoni says up-tempo style should suit Knicks , quote: New Knicks coach Mike D'Antoni said on Tuesday there are many ways to win basketball games but that he preferred the up-tempo, run-and-gun style he fashioned in Phoenix with the Suns ... "We want to run and we want to be exciting," he said. "I just think that's a great way to play and the players love it."
  9. a b Phoenix Proves the Doubters Wrong , quote: Phoenix had “Paul Ball,” the run-and-gun fast break offense taught by Paul Westhead, while Detroit played the hard-nosed, grind-it-out style taught by Bill Laimbeer ... After all, everybody says defense wins championships and the game has to slow down in the finals. The Mercury were out to prove those basketball cliches wrong in this series ... “The adage has always been out there in all leagues of basketball that a running team can't win the final series because everything slows down,” Westhead said. “We were kind of hell-bent on, win or lose, we weren't going to slow down. The fact that we were able to push it today, get good open shots and shoot on the run the way we have been all season and win, that's a nice achievement for our players. "
