Round chapel Eisenharz 2007

The Eisenharz round chapel is a chapel in Eisenharz, a part of the municipality of Argenbühl in the Ravensburg district in Westallgäu .

description

The chapel is located at the exit of the village on the district road 8018 in the direction of Ratzenried. The chapel, which is covered with wooden shingles, was extensively renovated in 1966. In doing so, they came across a medieval foundation made of field stones that were joined together with clay . Bricks were later placed over the field stones. The altarpiece has Saint Eligius as the theme. He is shown as a blacksmith shoeing a horse. Above the saint there is an image of Mary, Mother of Good Counsel , on the sides wooden figures of Saints Sebastian and Eligius. On Christmas Day ( Stephanus ) it has been the destination of an annual local horseman procession of the Stefansreitergruppe Eisenharz and surrounding rider groups since 1927 . The procession to the chapel probably took place as early as the 17th century .

Trivia

The fact that a man's skeleton was found under the field stones of the building during the renovation in 1966 opened up speculations as to whether the rotunda was not previously used as an ossuary . There is also the possibility that the location of the chapel could be a pre-Christian cult site .
