Roundhouse

The Rundlokschuppen Rummelsburg is a locomotive shed and an overall monument system in the Berlin district of Rummelsburg of the Lichtenberg district on the site of the former shunting yard and current depot Berlin-Rummelsburg . In addition to the round locomotive shed at the former Pankow freight yard, it is the only one of its kind still preserved in Germany.

history

The round locomotive shed was probably built around 1900 on the Rummelsburg marshalling yard by the Royal Railway Directorate. This structure has a diameter of 60 meters, has 24 columns made of cast iron , which are arranged a radius of 15 meters around the center and the dome, based on the model of the domes by Johann Wilhelm Schwedler, has a diameter of 30 meters. The turntable has a diameter of 16 meters and dates from the early days. The building also has an administration, a workshop, a building with service rooms, a warehouse and a water tank for the locomotives on the upper floor. In 1993 the use of the roundhouse was stopped. After its use, the building was repeatedly used for film productions. As the owner, Deutsche Bahn is not fulfilling its task of maintaining the structure. In 2010 she submitted a demolition request, which was not granted. However, since then there has been no renovation work on the building, which is difficult to use publicly due to its location in the middle of the track system.
