Runestone 1 from Østerlars

The rune stone 1 of Østerlars ( Danish Østerlarsker-sten 1 ) is in the cemetery of the church of Østerlars on the Danish island of Bornholm .

The well-preserved rune stone (DR 397 or Bh 48) found in 1643 is first mentioned in Ole Worms (1588–1654) Monumenta Danica. The stone was then in front of the Karnhaus of the Østerlars Church.

The stone, decorated in the center with a paw cross , belongs to the group of late Bornholm stones from the transition period between the Viking Age (800 to 1050 AD) and the older Middle Ages (1075–1125 AD). The granite rune stone is around 1, 5 m high, 38–59 cm wide and 28 cm thick.

The inscription on the broad side of the stone reads. "Thykil / Thorkil lifted stones after {buþu}, {þku} son ..."

Translated: "Thorkell set up the stone in memory of {buþu}, {þku} his {son} ..."

Some sequences seem to be atypical abbreviations. For this reason the inscription is difficult to interpret. The rune height is 7.0 cm. Colons are used as word separators. The outlined font is in frame bands with outer and inner frame lines and begins at the bottom left. This stone and the rune stone at the church of Rø (Røsten, DR 409 or Bh 12) as well as the rune stone 6 by Østermarie (DR 395 or Bh 56) were possibly carved by the same rune master .

In the church is the rune stone Øster Larsker 2 .
