Runestone Sö 97

The rune stone Sö 97 , together with rune stone Sö 96 and the fragments of rune stone Sö 98 to Sö 100, belong to the rune stones of the Jäders kyrka in Jäder near Kjulaås, northeast of Eskilstuna in Södermanland in Sweden .

The rune stone Sö 97 was found during the renovation of the church in 1866 . It was about half a meter below the church floor, north of the corridor. The reason the floor was removed was because the organ by Per Larsson Åkerman was built. The incision is damaged and the left part of the serpentine ribbon is missing. The snake that forms a circle is connected in the upper part. The stone is provided with a ring cross in the lower part and the last three words of the text are engraved on the left side of the stone.

The inscription reads: “Åsgöt built this stone ... his father, Arne's foster brother.” The very unusual word “fosterbroder” appears on the stone's gable. It can mean foster son, foster father, or foster brother. Since the deceased has a son, “foster brother” seems most likely.
