Runestone Sö 96

The rune stone Sö 96 , together with rune stone Sö 97 and the fragments of rune stones Sö 98 to Sö 100, belong to the rune stones of the Jäders kyrka in Jäder near Kjulaås, northeast of Eskilstuna in Södermanland in Sweden .

Sö 96 is a halved rune stone fragment made of bluish granite that was on the door of the sacristy until 1883. Now it is next to Sö 97 in the southeast corner of the church . The stone is 1.65 m high, 1.2 m wide and 0.16 to 0.22 m thick. The 8.0 to 16 cm high runes are on the south side and west edge. The stone is generally considered to be one of the Ingvar stones ( Ingvarsstenar in Swedish ). The decoration is reminiscent of Ingvar stones in the neighborhood, but the strongest assumption is the text part "Han var faren" (with Ingvar) which reminds of Sö 105 in Högstena:

The inscription in at least two serpentine ribbons begins with: “... this stone after Bägler, his father, husband of Safa.” The name Bägler is only on this stone, and it is assumed that it is a nickname, the original meaning of which is unclear is. There are suggestions, but none are particularly sure.

Remarks

  1. Ingvar Vittfarne ( German  "Ingvar the far-traveled " , also Ingvar Emundsson) undertook a war trip ( Swedish útrór ) mentioned on 26 rune stones to the Caspian Sea , in which he and many of his people died.
