Runestone U 938

The rune stone U 938 is a rune stone made of red granite . It is 1.9 m high and 1.2 m wide and was found in 1910 in the northwest corner of the old Uppsala market in Uppland , Sweden . In the Middle Ages there was a Franciscan monastery there.

The stone was divided horizontally and reassembled. It is adorned with an intricate triple snake ornament that fills the entire front of the stone. The inscription starts at the head and ends at the tail. A cross can be seen in the upper part.

The inscription from the 11th century reads: Holmfast had the stone built in memory of Igulger, his father, and Torbjörn.

The very short text does not allow any reliable statement about the role Torbjörn had. Whether he was the builder of the stone together with Holmfast, or whether he was honored with the rune stone together with Igulger.

The stone is not signed, but is assigned to the rune master Öpir .

The stone is located behind the Gustavianum in the Universitetsparken (University Park) along with other rune stones, a modern rune stone and a concrete copy of a Bronze Age ship carving .
