Runestone from Egtved

The Egtved rune stone (DR 37 or SJy 6) was found during the restoration in 1863 in the cemetery wall of the church of Egtved in Jutland , Denmark . The dated 900-1020 rune stone from granite is in Karnhaus the church.

The stone, which is about 89 cm high, 55 cm wide and 43 cm thick, was split, so that the two-line runic inscription is fragmentary and difficult to read.

"... ... ... at 'fai (n) ['] (t) u ÷ i suiu 'raises ¶ ... ... uþiʀ' aft 'bruþur ¶ stain' sasi 'skarni' ... "

“Fainn (?) Died in Svia (?). Brother carved in memory of brother. This stone ... "

Fainn could mean “the painted one” or “the tattooed one”. The place name Suiu points to Svia in Uppland in Sweden . The meaning of the word "skarni" is unknown.
