Running ( English for running ) is an English-language pop song that was interpreted by Sandro Nicolas . With the title he should represent Cyprus at the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 in Rotterdam .

Background and production

At the end of November 2019, the responsible broadcaster CyBC announced that Alessandro Hütten would represent Cyprus at the upcoming Eurovision Song Contest under his stage name Sandro. On March 6, 2020, the corresponding contribution called Running was presented to the public for the first time. Sandro wrote it with Alfie Arcuri, Sebastian Rickards, Octavian Rasinariu and Theofilos Pouzbouris . The latter produced and mixed the title.

The shooting of the music video took place in Athens under the direction of Alexandros Kostelidis . It shows Sandro singing against light and dark backgrounds. One day after publication, the title appeared on download and streaming platforms. An acoustic version was also released on April 13th .

Music and lyrics

In Running it related to a dark history, which constitutes the fight against the misery and storms that one must go through in life. The singer suffered from depression, which inspired the performance in the music video. Sandro wrote the title for people who felt alone and abandoned and that not everything in life is good and happy. The lyrics are about the singer being tired of running from these demons, but still running on ( I'm tired of running from these demons ).

The two stanzas are each made up of two lines. The chorus is surrounded by a pre- and post-chorus and repeated twice. The second repetition is followed by the bridge and the outro.

In terms of style, music editors locate the title in the field of dance-pop or deep house .

At the Eurovision Song Contest

Cyprus should have appeared with this song in the first semifinals of the Eurovision Song Contest 2020. However, due to the advancing COVID-19 pandemic , the competition was canceled. The choreography should be developed by Marvin Dietmann.

reception

Wiwibloggs complained that the song did not give the singer the opportunity to show his singing skills. The title is good for the radio, as well as a remix for the dance floor. According to Eurovisionary, the expectations of the contribution were too high. Running is good dance pop, but no more and no less. The song would only be brought to life by Sandro's live performance and would not be noticed in the studio version. ESC Kompakt wrote that, in contrast to the singer, the contribution seemed “cold and without any real authenticity”. The composers were inspired by the work of Meduza and Goodboys . The title seems interchangeable.
