Meduza is a bilingual internet newspaper based in Riga , Latvia . Meduza was founded in October 2014 by the former editor-in-chief of Lenta.ru , Galina Timchenko , and reports in Russian and English.

history

Like the editor-in-chief, most of the news website's 20 employees used to work for Lenta.ru . According to Timchenko, Putin did not recognize the power of the Internet until after the 2011 Duma elections and increased the censorship measures accordingly. Continuing to work from Russia would have meant dealing with the police, secret services and tax authorities. One “wrong” tweet is enough, “and six services come to check the editorial team”.

Investigative journalist Ivan Golunov , who works for Meduza , was arrested by police in Moscow on June 6, 2019 . The investigators accused him of drug possession, the non-governmental organization Reporters Without Borders spoke of "fabricated allegations" to silence a journalist critical of the government. The three most important business media Vedomosti, RBK and Kommersant expressed their solidarity with an identical title on June 9, while tens of thousands of citizens and celebrities campaigned for Golunov. Even before a planned public protest in Moscow on June 12, the Russian judiciary dropped the case against Golunov on June 11, 2019 and dropped the allegation of drug possession. According to the interior ministry, an internal investigation of the events is to be scheduled.
