Ivan Golunov

Iwan Walentinowitsch Golunow ( Russian Ива́н Валенти́нович Голуно́в , scientific transliteration Ivan Valentinovič Golunov ; born January 19, 1983 in Moscow ) is a Russian journalist . He is considered one of the most famous investigative journalists in Russia .

Life

Golunow writes for the multilingual Internet newspaper Meduza , based in Riga . Among other things, he researched corruption in Russia , for example the dramatically increased fortune of Moscow's Vice Mayor Pyotr Biryukov and his family or the enrichment of state employees in the mafia-like structures in the funeral sector.

Arrested in June 2019 and released

On June 6, 2019, Golunov was arrested on charges of drug trafficking . He was hospitalized shortly afterwards. His lawyer said Golunov was found to have broken ribs , bruises and a concussion .

After a subsequent examination and treatment in the hospital, Golunov was brought before a judge on June 8, 2019, who ordered house arrest until at least August 7, 2019 on charges of drug trafficking . According to the findings of Novaya Gazeta , there were no traces of Golunov either on the hands or on the drug sachets allegedly found near Golunov. Eight out of nine photos published by the police evidently did not come from Glounov's apartment, the inscription on the bags was not from him.

The human rights organization Reporters Without Borders also criticized the arrest and considered the drug trafficking allegation to be fabricated. On June 10, 2019, the three major Russian daily newspapers Kommersant , RBK and Vedomosti appeared with the headline: “We are Ivan Golunov” to protest the arrest. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov admitted that the proceedings had raised a number of questions, but did not want to "draw general conclusions from the case about mistrust in the entire system".

On June 11, 2019, the Russian judiciary closed its investigation against Golunov and dropped allegations of drug possession. According to the Ministry of the Interior, the house arrest against Golunov was lifted. Two police officers have been suspended and an internal investigation has been announced. During an unauthorized solidarity rally for Golunov after his release, the police arrested several hundred people, including journalists and the opposition politician Alexei Navalny .

background

Other journalists and other critics of the government have also been exposed to drug trials in the past, which are believed to be staged. Stealing drugs is a common way of being criminalized in Russia. The last known case before Golunov concerned the representative of the human rights organization Memorial in Chechnya , Oyub Titiev . He was sentenced to four years in prison in March 2019 and was tried again in June 2019.

Friends of the arrested person explained the possibility that this crude approach had been chosen deliberately, as a clear warning to other journalists. In the Novaya Gazeta, on the other hand, Kirill Martynov wrote that not only would journalists have been attacked, but that every citizen of Russia was protecting himself with his commitment to Golunov and against the arbitrary authorities. The writer Dmitri Gluchowski did not call it a triumph of justice, but "as always" in Russia, a triumph of political expediency, which tries to prevent any mobilization of civil society .
